What is Saju?

Saju (사주, 四柱) means “four pillars.” Often translated as the Korean Four Pillars of Destiny, it is a traditional way of arranging a person's birth information into a chart. The year, month, day, and hour each become one pillar, and every pillar is a pair: one heavenly stem above one earthly branch. When the birth time is not known, a three-pillar chart can still be calculated, but the missing hour is kept explicit rather than guessed.

The stems and branches are associated with yin or yang and with the Five Elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. A Saju reading looks at how those elements appear across the chart. The day's heavenly stem is called the Day Master and acts as the chart's center of reference. Traditional analysis then considers which elements are well represented, how the Day Master is supported, and which complementary elements the chart calls for.
